Facebook finally launched #hashtags

Hashtags are coming to Facebook to help users better surface conversations.

Support for the all-but-ubiquitous topic organization system was rumored in March and will roll out to a small percentage of users Wednesday. Facebook will roll out hashtags to more users in the coming weeks.

The social network wants to make it easier for users to find content already on Facebook, and functional hashtags are the first step. According to Facebook, many users already post hashtags anyway, so why not make them work? Hashtags will be both clickable and searchable, so, for example, topics like #NSALeaks or #NBAFinals will now exist.

Hashtags from other services, such as Instagram, are clickable as well. Users will also be able to compose posts directly from a hashtag feed and search results. That could make adding real-time content to specific streams easier than before.

Twitter user Chris Messina created in 2007 the hashtag as we know it today. Twitter eventually adopted the system of organizing tweets around a certain subject into its API and its broader ecosystem. Since then, the hashtag has been adopted by other services, including Flickr, Tumblr, Google+ and even Facebook-owned Instagram.

Facebook buys Instagram photo app for $1 bn

Facebook announced Monday that it had reached an agreement to acquire Instagram, describing it as "a fun, popular photo-sharing app for mobile devices," for $1 billion in cash and shares.

"For years, we've focused on building the best experience for sharing photos with your friends and family," Facebook founder and chief Mark Zuckerberg said in announcing the deal

"Now, we'll be able to work even more closely with the Instagram team to also offer the best experiences for sharing beautiful mobile photos with people based on your interests."

Zuckerberg called the acquisition "an important milestone for Facebook because it's the first time we've ever acquired a product and company with so many users. We don't plan on doing many more of these, if any at all.

"But providing the best photo sharing experience is one reason why so many people love Facebook and we knew it would be worth bringing these two companies together."

Facebook in February filed for a stock offering and could raise as much as $10 billion in the largest flotation ever by an Internet company on Wall Street.

Facebook -- the leading social network in all but six countries, notably China and Russia -- said it has more than 845 million users including 483 million who log in daily.

Facebook's value has been estimated at between $75 billion and $100 billion.

Facebook raises limit on status updates to over 60,000 characters !!

Facebook is going to leave no stone unturned to maintain its dominance in the social networking segment. Earlier this year, it rolled out a series of updates, including video chat service, ticker and timeline. And now the social networking site has turned its attention towards the “status update” section. Facebook has increased the maximum length of its 'status update' to more than 60,000 characters ( 63,206 to be precise), 12 times of what it used to be.

However, it's not the first time when the social networking site has expanded the status limit. Back in July this year, Facebook increased this limit to 500 characters. Just after a month, the limit was increased up to 5,000 characters.


Facebook’s Journalist Program Manager Vadim Lavrusik shares a picture on the social networking site, stating, “In September, we increased the character limit on status updates to 5,000 characters. Today, we're announcing that you can now write posts with more than 60,000 characters.”


In spite of the update, Facebook does not score over the newly launched Google+. Google's social networking site lets you post updates of length of about 100,000 characters.


However, Twitter, another popular social networking site, allows users to post status of up to 140 characters.

Facebook to Open Engineering Office in New York City in 2012

NEW YORK – December 2, 2011 – To keep up with its rapid growth, Facebook today announced plans to establish an engineering presence in New York City and tap into the remarkable technical talent that the region has to offer. The Facebook NYC engineering office, the company’s first outside the West Coast, will open in early 2012 and will begin accepting applications immediately.

“More than 800 million people around the world rely on Facebook, and more than half of them visit every day. Operating at such a large scale, and innovating as quickly as we do, we need to recruit the most talented engineers in the world,” said Mike Schroepfer, Facebook’s Vice President of Engineering. “New York has a strong history of innovation and is home to thousands of talented technical people, and we want them to help us solve the challenges of designing and building the next generation of Facebook,” he added.

Originally from Connecticut, Serkan joined Facebook in Palo Alto in 2007 and moved back to New York for Facebook in the summer of 2010. Jay Parikh, who oversees Facebook’s infrastructure team, will serve as the executive sponsor for the new office.

Facebook Says Indian Users Not Hit by Hacking Attack

Now we can say that we are kind of safe !! But please be careful while using FB . . Again m repeating that don't visit suspicious links !! Facebook has said that it has stopped most of the spam that has flooded many users. Social-networking sites are popular targets for spammers because people are more likely to trust and share content that comes from people they know. This makes spam, scams and viruses easy to spread.

Internet site Facebook Inc. Thursday said user accounts in India weren't affected by the spam attack which posted pornographic and violent images on the pages of users of the popular social networking website in the U.S. earlier this week.

Denying a recent media report, Facebook said that there have been inaccurate reports of users' accounts being hacked in India.


"This is not true. Protecting the people who use Facebook from spam and malicious content is a top priority for us".

Facebook has 25 million users in India.


Earlier, a report on the Midday tabloid website said accounts of more than 200,000 Facebook users were hacked and weblinks to their morphed pornographic pictures were sent as news feeds to friends and family.
However, Facebook denied this, saying users' photos were not transferred to an unwanted site and that no accounts were compromised.

Facebook's denial comes as the company Tuesday acknowledged a "coordinated spam attack" in the U.S. over the weekend, where some of its users were tricked into pasting and executing "malicious javascript" in their browser URL bar, causing them to share offensive content without knowing it.


"Our efforts have drastically limited the damage caused by this attack, and we are now in the process of investigating to identify those responsible," Facebook said, in a separate response to the attack overseas.
The company has a no-nudity policy and requires that members be at least 13 years old. Users are encouraged to report questionable content via links on Facebook pages. The social network also removes pornography on its own initiative.


"We are always working to improve our systems to isolate and remove material that violates our terms, and take action on those who is responsible for these types of content," the company said Thursday.
The site is facing challenges at a time when it is set to unveil a major redesign of the profile pages of its 800 million users. The redesign, called Timeline, is supposed to allow Facebook users to let the site organize all of their actions chronologically.
